Design for Success:

Choose the right R&D Structure and Processes to Deliver Innovations

Mike Hess

Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering

University of Minnesota

Former Vice President of Corporate Technology and Innovation - Medtronic

---     19th November 2026, Thursday at 9am EST/3pm CET     ---

Mike Hess will share with us insights from more than three decades of leading R&D teams in the medical device industry on how to structure R&D organizations to deliver innovations.

How should a business set up its R&D organization? There is no single right answer: the best design varies by team and will change over time for any given business. In this talk, Mike will review the considerations that shape this design, including the maturity of the technology and the market, the leverage of technology and resources from external partners or other parts of the company, and geographical considerations. He will also discuss governance and how businesses can manage their R&D portfolios when the inevitable resource contentions and priority calls arise.

About the Speaker:

Mike Hess has worked in the medical device field for 36 years, including over 33 years at Medtronic and 3 with OrganOx, now a division of Terumo Group.  In both companies, Mike was responsible for leading engineering teams, departments, and programs in both business and corporate functions, including large established businesses and smaller early-stage teams. He also led clinical research and upstream marketing functions, and was responsible for establishing structures and processes for R&D programs and portfolio management. Mike was named a Medtronic Technical Fellow and elected to the Medtronic Bakken Society, and is an AIMBE fellow. Mike has 36 issued patents and numerous publications to his credit. Currently retired from industry, Mike is an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, where he serves as an industrial advisor to Sr design teams.  He is also a Sr Member of IEEE EMBS chapter and serves on the EMBS Advisory Committee as an industrial practice representative.
