In this ODC presentation, Samina Karim will discuss the evolution of her research pipeline that hinges on fundamental ideas at the core of organizational design. She will share how ideas came to be, issues faced when exploring various research questions at different units of analysis, and challenges in the publication process. She will conclude with a discussion of avenues for future study in the field.
About the Speaker:
Samina Karim is Professor and Chair of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group at Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business. Her research focuses on corporate strategy and organization design, acquisitions and alliances, and innovation through reconfiguration of resources and activities. Samina’s research has been published in a wide array of top journals including Academy of Management Journal, Harvard Business Review, Management Science, Organization Science, Sloan Management Review, and Strategic Management Journal. She currently serves as Associate Editor at Management Science’s Business Strategy department, and on the editorial review boards of Journal of Organization Design (where she was Senior Editor 2013-2017), Organization Science (where she was Deputy Editor 2020-2025), Strategic Management Journal (where she was Associate Editor 2014-2020), Strategic Organization, and Strategy Science. In 2020 she served as the Division Chair for the Strategic Management (STR) Division of the Academy of Management where she launched the STRonger Together initiatives, and in 2016 was the Chair for the Competitive Strategy Interest Group of the Strategic Management Society (SMS). Samina currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Strategic Management Society and recently completed her role as President of the Consortium on Competitiveness and Cooperation (CCC) (from 2023-2026). Prior to joining Northeastern, Samina taught at Boston University for thirteen years and earned degrees from the University of Michigan (Ph.D. Strategy; MA Economics), Harvard University (MA Education), and Cornell University (BS Electrical Engineering), and worked for Hewlett-Packard Co. In her spare time, she is passionate about volunteer service, science fiction, space (non-fiction), fast cars, and strategy board games.
