The Impact of Blockchain Technology on Organizational Design

Blockchain technology has the potential to significantly impact organizational design by enabling new forms of collaboration. Traditionally, organizations have been designed around a hierarchical structure, with decision-making power concentrated at the top. This structure relies on trust in the leadership and management to make informed decisions for the organization. In contrast, blockchain technology enables decentralized decision-making through the use of smart contracts and consensus mechanisms. With blockchain, organizations can operate in a decentralized manner, with decision-making power distributed among all participants in the network. This can lead to increased transparency, accountability, and trust. Additionally, blockchain’s tamper-proof and immutable nature can help prevent fraud and corruption within the organization. However, it is important to note that these benefits come with their own set of challenges, such as regulatory issues, security concerns, and the need for technical expertise.
About the speaker:
Fabrice Lumineau is a Professor in Strategic Management at HKU Business School, The University of Hong Kong. His research investigates inter-organizational partnerships, the interplay between contract and trust in collaborative strategies, opportunism and ethical issues, and blockchain governance. He has published more than 30 articles in the top management journals, such as Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science, Organization Studies, Research Policy, and Strategic Management Journal. Prof. Lumineau serves on the editorial board of Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Strategic Organization.
